Twelve recent UCF graduates have received prestigious Fulbright awards, setting the university’s new single-year record. The awards will allow the students to travel abroad to pursue research and educational opportunities or teach English. Three of the students hold minors from the College of Arts and Humanities.
Carolyn Mitchell ’19 has a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and a minor in writing & rhetoric. She also holds a TEFL certificate for teaching English as a foreign language. “I will be an English teaching assistant at the University of Uzbek Language and Literature in the capital where I’ll be instructing Uzbek students who wish to become translators,” she says. “My secondary role is to work with the Department of Tourism to help establish English proficiency in professionals within the tourism and outdoor recreation sectors.”
Khadejah Khan ’20 holds a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and minors in history and writing & rhetoric. “I will be working as an English teaching assistant with students inside and outside of the classroom to improve their English language skills,” he says. “I aim to share my passion for writing and storytelling by working with budding Malay writers, and hoping to learn more about Malay literature while introducing diverse multicultural American writers to Malay literati.”
Abigail Weisse ’20 holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and minors in Spanish and English – Creative Writing. “I will be an English teaching assistant helping in classrooms, conducting writing workshops and tutoring students at the University of Málaga in Málaga,” she says. “While there, I hope to implement a program to assist Spanish university students in applying to graduate school in the United States in order to reciprocate the cross-cultural exchange between our two countries.”
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program, sponsored by the State Department, started in 1946 and awards about 1,900 grants annually to scholars from all areas of study. The program promotes international goodwill through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture and science.
