The UCF Department of English is deeply saddened to announce that Dr. Patricia Angley passed away on September 4, 2020. Angley was a Senior Lecturer who joined the department in 1998; she was active in teaching, administration, student advising, and union work at UCF for the past 22 years.

Angley earned her PhD at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa in 1998, writing a dissertation on women in the literary texts of William Faulkner. Prior to earning her doctoral degree, she taught at Texas Christian University, Christopher Newport College, and the College of William and Mary. At UCF she quickly became an integral part of campus life through teaching courses on such topics as Native American literature, the American novel, and Toni Morrison. She served on innumerable committees at all levels of the university.

Pat Angley always made herself available to students and was integral to countless successes by UCF undergraduates. She was a relentless presence within the English department and continually brought moments of joy to her colleagues. Her longtime colleague and friend James Campbell said of her “Pat was beloved by everyone. She was the heart of the English department.”

The Department of English is developing a memorial video of testimonies to Pat’s effect on the lives of her students and colleagues. All those interested in participating are encouraged to contact James Campbell at james.campbell@ucf.edu.

A scholarship fund is being established in her name; the family asks that memorial donations be made to the fund.
