Luis Martinez Fernandez

In a recent article published by The Global Post, UCF Professor of History Dr. Luis Martínez-Fernández argues that historians occupy a unique position to shed light on present-day circumstances. Yet Martínez-Fernández also feels that historians’ ability to perform this task has come under attack in recent years.

He points to the recent political discourse over “truth” as ignoring the kinds of insights intellectuals like historians provide, and argues that our leaders face the present blindly without the assistance of historical observation and reflection.

However, Martínez-Fernández does not confine his critique to attacks coming from outside the academy, he is also critical of the broad-based institutional push toward STEM type programs, and away from the Arts and Humanities.
