If you’re working on a project or homework assignment, you may play music to help you concentrate. Other than music’s ability to make the mundane more bearable, how does listening to music affect us? Violin professor Ayako Yonetani’s research was used in Medium’s article about music and its relation to studying and concentration. Yonetani’s research supports the theory that listening to music has the ability to reduce stress, pain and symptoms of depression, as well as improve cognitive and motor skills, spatial-temporal learning and neurogenesis.

“Music may increase neurogenesis in the hippocampus, leading to the production of new neurons and improving memory,” says Yonetani in her research.
