The journal Rhetoric of Health & Medicine is one of two journals awarded the 2019 Best New Journal by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals. Founded and co-edited by Dr. Lisa Melonçon and Writing and Rhetoric Professor Blake Scott, the journal seeks to bring together humanities and social scientific research traditions to allow scholars to build new interdisciplinary theories, methodologies, and insights that can impact our understanding of health.
The Council of Editors of Learned Journals is an allied organization of the national Modern Language Association, which held the awards ceremony in Seattle. It has been over ten years since a rhetoric and composition journal has won this award, and only three have won the award in the association’s nearly 35-year history, making this a rare achievement.
The Rhetoric of Health & Medicine journal publishes studies of health and medicine that take a rhetorical perspective. Such studies combine rhetorical analysis with any number of other methodologies—including critical/cultural analysis, ethnography, qualitative analysis, and quantitative analysis—in order to develop new insights that can impact society’s understanding of and approaches to health, illness, healing, and wellness.
The open-access repository site for the journal is open to the public and features various forms of digital content, such as research videos and multimedia reviews.
