Valencia College’s spring Visiting Author events launched on January 28, featuring a virtual discussion and presentation from Anastasia Salter, Director of Graduate Programs and Texts and Technology, and Mel Stanfill, assistant professor of English and Texts and Technology. Salter and Stanfill discussed their newly released book A Portrait of the Auteur as Fanboy.
Frequent collaborators, Salter and Stanfill found themselves repeatedly experiencing the challenges of “affirmational fandom and the ways the elevation of the ‘fanboy’ was playing out across transmedia franchises,” which led to the creation of their book. Their “Visiting Author” presentation delved into fandom and geek culture, explained numerous franchise auteur case studies and particularly looked at how fandoms are used and reshaped by the media industry.
