Kerry Purmensky and Florin Mihai of UCF’s Department of Modern Languages and Literatures have received a 5-year, $2.6 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition.
Purmensky and Mihai are co-principal investigators with Joyce Nutta of UCF’s College of Education and Human Performance. Lisa Nalbone, of the Spanish M.A. program, will participate as a subject-area expert.
Their project, “Dual Language Support through Technology Enhanced Programs and Strategies,” aims to improve academic achievement for K-12 students learning English by fostering dual-language programs in Greater Orlando and Tampa Bay.
The dual-language project involves administrators, teachers, staff and community members in partner schools. Its programs will develop skills in professional learning and coaching and offer resources to improve family and community engagement.
