The first large-scale public art sculpture by Lea Patrice Fales, University of Central Florida senior and Studio Art major, will be installed next month for the Museum of Florida Art’s 2013-2015 DeLand Sculpture Walk, along with eleven other artists. The opening reception is being held on October 17, 2013; everyone is invited to attend!
The twelve outdoor sculptures will be installed throughout downtown DeLand for a two year exhibition. The museum website states that “the goal of the project is to bring art to public places while also enhancing the aesthetic experience, the cultural image and economic viability of historic downtown DeLand.” Additionally, all of the artwork is available for purchase, creating an added benefit of supporting local artists.
Directional Choices, designed by Lea Patrice Fales, is purposefully derived from a marine oil lamp’s function to guide mariners. The design of the sails curvature to the left and right serve as reflections of the choices people make in the everyday navigation of their surroundings. The smooth, yet twisted metal surfaces communicate initial tranquility with a touch of underlying motion. Overall, the relationship of the sculpture to the viewer is sharply dynamic, welcoming, and open to the public’s interpretation.
Fabrication was made possible with the input of Doundey Sheet Metal Works of Winter Park and Glory Sandblasting of Orlando. The biggest thanks for insight, guidance, and assistance throughout the entire project goes to her father, John M. Fales III, retired design engineer and fabricator.
About The Artist
Lea Patrice Fales graduated from Freedom High School in 2005, Valencia Community College in 2011, and anticipating graduation from the University of Central Florida in May 2014.
While at UCF, Lea has become a founding member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, Pi Xi Chapter; member of the Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society; member of the Knight Advocates organization; former intern of UCFs fine-art research facility and printing press, Flying Horse Editions; and currently an intern with Orange County¹s Department of Arts and Cultural Affairs.
Lea is applying to graduate programs this fall to further research small to large-scale installation planning and fabrication. It is important to her to better understand how material deterioration affects the display of installations over time.
She wanted to personally add, “Being a part of the 2013-2015 DeLand Sculpture Walk has truly been a life-changing experience. I have made great strides in understanding the planning, fabrication, and promotion of public art.
