Each March, the Art & History Museums of Maitland’s Art Center host Art31, a month-long series of art exhibits. At this year’s fourth annual gallery event series, the art is centered around Borrowed Light, an exhibition inspired by Stephen Knapp’s brilliant paintings that incorporate lights, glass, and color.
Ryan Buyssens, an assistant professor at UCF, is one of the featured artists. His high-tech sculptures, which involve the use of 3D printers, laser-cutting, and other technology, have been shown around the world. At Art31, he will be showcasing Chromactive: An Interactive Color Experience.
His goal for the piece is for it to involve viewers as active participants in the art. Motion sensors attached to the piece will detect viewers’ presence and change the colors and movement of the sculpture accordingly.
Buyssens was inspired by the idea that light can affect mood, and that alterations in the placement of reflective objects can completely reshape a space and immerse viewers.
His piece, along with those of many other distinguished artists, can be viewed during the gallery hours of 11am to 4pm, Tuesday through Sunday. The Art31 exhibition runs at the Art & History Museums of Maitland’s Art Center from March 3 through April 16.
