SVAD Associate Professor and Assistant Director Kevin Haran earned first prize at the annual Works on Paper exhibition at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, Massachusetts. His mixed-media drawing UFO 3 was selected from over 700 entries.
Juror Al Miner, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, comments on the work: “No computer graphics program can replace the strength and elegance of great draftsmanship. With minimal means – a limited palette, straight lines, and traditional materials – this is more a portrait of form itself than a depiction of an object. With stains and a corner tear it evocatively references the past, when new machines and sci-fi predictions of the future captured the public’s imagination.”
Professor Robert Rivers, who has taught drawing at UCF for over 30 years states, “Haran’s UFO drawings are a rich vein, and perfect, not needing to be anything else. They have a great balance of imagination, classical form, and beautiful use of materials that compose the raw surface then winding into high detail. Beginning, middle, and end are seen at one time. He knows where to mine the treasure.”
Haran reflects on the work, “I usually make art without knowing where it will be shown, so it is always a thrill to have it selected for an exhibition and it is even more of an honor to be chosen for an award.”
The exhibition, which includes original works that offer distinctive, imaginative imagery using paper, is open October 24 through December 21, 2014 at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, Massachusetts.
