Virtual Event: Juneteenth in American History

Each year on June 19, we celebrate Juneteenth: a holiday commemorating the belated announcement in Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a day of celebration and remembrance, on which we pay tribute to those who sacrificed so much for freedom and mark a point in our country’s history where racial healing could begin.

This year, you can learn more about the history and relevance of Juneteenth by attending a virtual event! On June 8 from 7:00–8:00 p.m., the Orange County Library System will host Juneteenth in American History. Dr. Fon Gordon, associate professor of history and coordinator of Africana studies, will discuss the holiday’s history and significance.
