The UCF School of Visual Arts and Design is pleased to announce the upcoming dedication of public artwork on Friday, November 8, 2013, at 4:00 p.m.
As part of the dedication of the new Classroom II and ROTC Building at UCF, artist Malcolm Robertson will be honored for his work “We See The Same Stars.” Robertson strives to make connections with people and places by creating public artworks that convey a sense of importance and meaning specific to the “environment and social context in question.”
“We See The Same Stars” is a 13-sided sculpture in mirror-polished stainless steel featuring 50 large stars set within a sky of smaller distant stars and is located in the ROTC rotunda.
José Fernández, Dean of the College of Art and Humanities says, “This outstanding artwork is an important way to honor our great nation and our valiant soldiers who defend it.”
Paul Lartonoix, Assistant Vice Provost and the ASB administrator who lead the project, describes the work in this way: “The reflective surfaces allow the viewers to see themselves in a piece that connects the academic classrooms to the patriotic ROTC. This building is already a bridge and ‘We See the Same Stars’ helps to complete that bridge.”
UCF’s incoming Art in State Buildings Program administrator, Kevin Haran comments, “This new public work honors and symbolizes the ROTC program while accenting the rotunda space.”
The Classroom II and ROTC Building is located on Memory Mall at the UCF Orlando campus, 12650 Gemini Boulevard North, Orlando, FL 32816.
