Even in the darkest of times, storytelling can shine a light. Theatre UCF’s immersive, stirring production of Indecent demonstrates just that, transporting audiences to the early 20th century and weaving a tale of the transformative power of art. The show opened on Thursday, Jan. 28 and received a standing ovation from its enraptured audience.
Indecent, written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel, is a deeply moving and liberating story that follows the true story of The God of Vengeance. Written by Polish-Yiddish playwright Sholem Asch, The God of Vengeance is notable for portraying the first lesbian kiss on a Broadway stage, which resulted in the show’s producer and cast being arrested and convicted of obscenity. Directed by Theatre UCF Artistic Director Julia Listengarten, Indecent explores the human themes driving these events, placing a spotlight on those who risked their careers and lives to fight against marginalization.
“Steeped in a multilayered Jewish cultural landscape, Indecent raises difficult questions about identity, belonging, erasure of cultures and languages, censorship within communities and by government, and hypocrisy that ruins people’s lives and professional careers,” writes Listengarten in the her director’s note. “The play is also a compelling testament to the power of theatre to trample prejudices and intolerance and to celebrate love, resilience and cultural differences.”
