The Flying Horse Big Band is garnering a bit of national attention for its most recent album, Big Man on Campus, which at the time of this writing is #6 on the Roots Music Report (RMR) Top 50 and #45 on the JazzWeek Top 50. The album debuted on RMR at #17, and has rocketed to within spitting distance of the top five in just a few short weeks.

Directed by Jeff Rupert, Big Man on Campus is a combination of new arrangements of classic songs and original music from acclaimed tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, who also lends his considerable skill and dexterity to a number of solos throughout. The album has been well received; the Seattle PI review said, “The band fuses decades of melodic jazz into a single recording, regaling audiences with their multi-faceted brew,” and All About Jazz called it a “splendid recording.”

Clearly, they’re not the only ones who enjoyed it.
